I am a landscape painter working in my studio in Tirril, near Penrith, close to Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. Previously I lived in Ambleside for 12 years. Favourite subjects include the Cumbrian Fells and Scottish Islands. I work mainly in oil and watercolour, and occasionally use acrylics and pastels.
For me, atmosphere is more important than too much detail. Leaving something to your imagination may stimulate you to engage with the work more closely and perhaps enjoy it more too. Another reason for my impressionist approach is that I want to create an interesting composition in an abstract sense – through an appealing arrangement of colours, shapes, lines, tones and textures. This leads me to move things around a little and perhaps change or exaggerate the colours – but I always aim to express the atmosphere and sense of place which I experienced at the time.
I exhibit in local galleries and my studio is open for visits – just phone to check I’m around.
