The Bastow Trophy
Prestigious Annual Art Award
About the Bastow Trophy
- In 2023 Long standing ADAS member Don Bastow generously created the Don and Jean Bastow award.
The winner, who is announced at our Annual Exhibition in October, receives the coveted Bastow Trophy for 1 year plus a £100 voucher for framing or art materials at Youdell’s Art Shop in Kendal.
Aim of this Award
At the preview evening of our 2023 exhibition Don introduced the award. He said that he is proud to be a member of what he considers to be one of the best regional art societies in the country. His aim is to attract new members, to encourage members to exhibit (especially those who have never done so before) and to encourage development of skills by expolring new styles or mediums.

Eligibility
Any ADAS member is eligible to win but the judges will consider the following criteria in particular
- Members who have recently (last 3 years) joined the society
- Members who are exhibiting for the first time.
- Members who have shown significant development in their skills by improving their techniques or by embracing new mediums or artistic styles.
ADAS are very grateful to Don Bastow for the creation of this award and to Barry and Naomi Spence of Youdell’s Art for sponsoring the prize.

Our Winners

OUR 2025 Winner is: Caroline Langham
OUR 2024 Winner is: Hana Bassett
OUR 2023 Winner is: Rebecca Frain
How to enter
Letters of nomination should be addressed to our Chair, Hugh Dickson and highlight to the judges why the work of a particular artist should be considered for this award. The artist concerned might have branched out into a new medium, or new subject area, achieved a significant milestone in their work or simply worked hard at improving their technique. Ideally this painting or body of work should be part of the exhibition but if this is not possible then it should be made available for judging on the receiving day
The award will be judged by the chair, the president and one other member of the committee.
